Ranking Is More Than Hyperlinks – Citation Analysis
As we already know, inbound links to your website have a huge impact on your rankings. Two of the main inputs are the anchor text, the title of the link and the authority of which the linking page holds.
What many webmasters and SEO professionals forget is the general principles on which Google and its algorithms were designed, scientific citation.
Therefore before we go further, let us take a quick look at what we mean by citation. Here is an excerpt regarding different citation methods and how Google uses citation.
“Methodologically, the Clever algorithm has close ties to citation analysis, the study of patterns of how scientific papers make reference to one another. Perhaps the field’s best-known measure of a journal’s importance is the “impact factor.” Developed by Eugene Garfield, a noted information scientist and founder of Science Citation Index, the metric essentially judges a publication by the number of citations it receives.”
Stompernet Site Seer - Nothing New Here
I have a lot of respect for the guys over at Stompernet as they are some of the best marketing talents online. However I must say that their new free tool ‘site seer’ is pretty much a let down.
Most of the on page optimization is a tutorial which can be gained at thousands of places online and not specific to your own site.
The rest of the search engine information can be gained by using dozens of free tools some of which give much better and more precise information.
If you are an absolute newbie, some of this information may be very helpful however there is very little instruction if any on what your next steps may be.
Social Media SEO Experiment
Bill over at socialdominator.com has just launched a new experiment to see how quickly he can get a site up and running using social media. Here is the blurb…
This is a grand experiment to see just how fast I can get a site ranking, profitable and with loads of traffic. I’ve been challenged to make a high traffic profitable site within days. I’ll keep you updated on all the results I get and fill you in on anything I find a success or a failure (so you don’t repeat my mistakes).
Having mixed social media with SEO for some time, I have a fair idea of the work it takes to make the two achieve good results.
I will be interested in the outcomes and also the videos and tips he provides on the way.
To keep up with this experiment and get some tips, pop over to http://www.socialdominator.com/seo-progress/first-post/ and subscribe to his blog.

General SEO Basics
Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is a proven way to improve the number of targeted visitors to your web site through the natural process of finding your web site on the Internet through the search engines. There is some difference of opinion among the experts as to what is acceptable and what is not, but the search engines are clear on what they will accept and what they will not accept.
The search engines are clear that they will accept anything that provides relevant content to the searcher and the search engine. There is no doubt that a well-designed web site with relevant, unique, and fresh content will rank well against its peers. As your web site gains relevant links, both inbound and outbound, it will rank even higher.
Ranking well with the search engines is a science. As such, it follows a well-established formula. With the appropriate amount of time and effort, any web site can rank well. If the web site owner does not want to invest the time, they can hire someone to do the work for them. Whether hired, or designed by yourself, there are some things that will make your web site rank high with the search engines.
Content Must be Relevant
First and foremost, search engines look for relevant content. This is the single most important aspect of a high ranking web site. Having a web site that is well designed is wonderful, but it will not help with ranking. Good content is content that is grammatically correct as well as free of spelling and factual errors. As important as the grammar, spelling, and facts are in your content, never lose sight of the fact that your content should be unique. “Borrowing” content is illegal as well as unethical.
Directory Links For SEO
Placing your link in major directories is still by far one of the best ways to not only increase ranking in the search engines but also obtain targeted traffic to your site.
When deciding on which directories to place links, authority directories should be your target whether it be local directories, major business directories or themed business specific directories.
Directory Qualities
Here is a quick list of items that should be considered when looking to place a link on directories.
- Authority within market place
- Age
- Theme – by industry or country inbound links – number and quality
- Yahoo listed
- Dmoz listed
- Links allowed – number
- Internal page allowed
- Price
- Directory pages cached by major search engines
How a Search Engine Placement Specialist Can Help You
The Internet provides a level playing field for businesses. Businesses that invest in a web site know this and want to get their share of the world wide customer base, but how to achieve this with a vast number of web sites available is a daunting task at best and may even seem impossible. One way is to work with a search engine placement specialist.
When a prospect conducts their search through one of the search engines or directories, they are looking for one of two things: Either they are looking for a product or they are looking for information; will they find your web site?
Consider this; you’re on the bus, the train, or driving to work. You see an advertisement in the newspaper or magazine, or on a billboard, and at that moment you think you could use the item being advertised. When you get to the office, you connect to your favorite search engine and type in what sticks in your mind. The results are…well, if the advertiser is search engine optimized, you will find the advertiser’s web site. Otherwise, you will likely find the competition. Now, think about what would happen if the searcher was someone looking for your web site.
General Link Building
Rules when linking…
1. Link to the same subject websites or at least within your larger business field/area.
2. Higher page rank sites best on the index page…. even better if higher on the links page.
3. Do not use link farm services. Link metro doesn’t quite fall in this category all saying this be choosey with whom
you link to.
4. Ranking for Goggle = quality over quantity. Ranking for Yahoo & Msn = quality & quantity.
5. Do not link to bad neighborhoods.
Reciprocal Linking Discussion Burning My Ears
It really annoys me when the SE’s make slight changes to their algorithms that many so called SE experts make a song and dance that the old is now completely defunct and the new will save you from ranking oblivion!
What a load of rot.
Reciprocal linking with themed, on topic and useful sites that match your content is…
- Great for your visitors.
- And yes… still good for pushing you up in the SE’s.
And it will always be that way. Read more

A Campaign To Suit Your Business - SEO or PPC
Before you get started with the Search Engines you should decide which of the two major Search Engine marketing strategies will work best for your site. This will help you to stay on track and not waste a lot of time needlessly.
The 2 major Search Engine marketing strategies that exist today are SEO (search engine optimization) and PPC (pay-per-click). You should know and understand that these two methods are very different from one another. This will help you to be better enabled to decide which one is right for you and your web site. Of course, part of this decision will depend upon what your web site is like.
One of the main reasons why it is difficult to decide which of these 2 strategies is best for your site lies in understanding why you cannot use both of these methods. In reality, there really is no reason why you cannot use both of these methods. In fact, it is encouraged to use both strategies because PPC can work well with any SEO plan.
Analyzing Your Serach Engine Competitors
Analyzing a competitor’s web site may seem like a big job. You should have the mindset that you are going to do this as a learning experience though. This will help you along your way when you may feel like giving up.
Before you even begin to analyze a competitor’s web site you should make sure that you are equipped to do the job. If you do this job properly you can gain a lot of information that will help you to increase your site’s traffic and popularity. These sites can also help you to analyze your own market. After all, if a web site is getting a lot of hits then it must be doing something right. If you take time to see where it is ranked, what key words are being used, how the site is formatted, and what you can do to make your site better while not violating any copyright laws then you will be well on your way to success.
How to Analyze your Website for SEO?
Although there are standard practices for Search Engine Optimization that almost all SEO Experts agree on, there are also many areas some deem unimportant and others say have to be done. All SEO techniques do not work on every website. Each website is unique and you have to develop the best method for just that website you are working on. In other words with each of the techniques I am going to talk about in this article keep in mind that “Your mileage may vary.
First, let’s define SEO for the purposes of this article. Many people regard SEO as a wide variety of services. Search Engine Submissions, coding, Meta tags, text content, optimizing load time, link building, directory submissions, buying and trading links, and more all fall under the heading of Search Engine Optimization to many SEO Experts.
According to Websearchworkshop, SEO is the term used to describe the marketing technique of preparing a website to enhance its chances of being ranked in the top results of a search engine once a relevant search is undertaken. A number of factors are important when optimizing a website, including the content and structure of the website’s copy and page layout, the HTML meta-tags and the submission process.
Wordtracker Tips For Better Keyword Research
If you want some great tips on researching keywords, don’t miss John Alexander’s free audio’s. Heres a bit of the blurb…
“Many of our readers have written to say that they have found our e-book “Wordtracker Magic” to be very helpful in their keyword research. Instead of taking hundreds of hours or days and weeks to discover the very best related keywords and phrases, you can often tap into them in just mere minutes or with practice in seconds.”
Every audio is great information with no filler waht so ever.

Why Google Universal Search Will Fail
I have been a huge fan of Google since coming online. Even before I got into internet marketing and SEO, Google was the first and only search engine I used as their results were the most relevant even back then.
That being said, I think they’re new universal search will only help two distinct groups of people… webmasters and researchers.
The Searcher…
The simple fact of the matter is… when people search, they already have in mind the type of format in which they wish the information to be presented.
For instance, if someone is looking for “how to information”, you may get some people who will consider both video and text however a large majority of people will already have a preference of one over the other.

Google’s Created Monster - PageRank Debacle
There’s been a whole range of comments from the SEO community regarding Google’s reduction of PageRank across the web.
For my money Google should practice what it preaches when it tells website owners that honesty about ones site and reporting of paid links should be adopted.
Here are some points to think over…
1. Google created the PageRank monster which has spawned a whole industry. They should be the ones fixing it by eliminating Pagerank all together.
2. If websites wish to sell link advertising to gain revenue it has nothing to do with search engines. Website owners should not have to modify their websites using nofollow tags because Google made a mistake creating pagerank.
Yahoo and Google Unite To Create Sitemaps.org
On November 16th, Yahoo, Google and Microsoft have united together to create sitemaps.org: A protocol that is created to improve search results. Instead of relying solely on the crawler algorithms to discover content on a publisher’s site, sitemaps.org will allow the publisher to tell all search engines involved within this protocol about the content within their website.
This has been a breakthrough in joint search engine cooperation as sitemaps.org invites all major search engines to take part within the making of this protocol with no single company managing the site. In other words, sitemaps.org isn’t owned by Google, Yahoo or MSN, it is entirely geared to serve in mutual cooperation.
This is a revolutionary new trend within the webmaster community as webmasters won’t have to solely rely on a particular search engine’s crawler algorithm to await indexing results through their site’s content. With this extraordinary new website, it will make the process for webmasters much easier as they will be able to implement the protocol through sitemaps.org to get their content noticed by all participating search engines that will take part in this open invitational sitemap community.
In the long run, implementation of sitemaps.org sitemap file will greatly help to increase a publisher’s overall search ranking through all search engines participating. It is a giant leap towards cooperation with all Search Engine brands and this protocol will indeed become a popular method for publishers to utilize this amazing new benefit for their website to help accelerate to the top rankings of the major search engines.

An More In Depth Look At Link Building
1. Reciprocal links! Yes they still hold value as the SE’s are constantly and will continue to change their algorithms. See my newsletter article “The Future of Search Engine Rankings” - http://www.thewebtrafficco.com/ecommerce-web-traffic-monthly/18-04-06.htmlÂ
2. Place your links on directories, education sites (google love them), sites not relevant (small percentage), same business relevance sites and “exact same topic sites (as many as possible)
3. Vary the pr of sites where your link is placed.
4. Make sure you have both one way and reciprocal links, not just one or the other.
5. Keep you linking campaigns constant. Add roughly the same amount of links each month to keep the SE’s happy.
6. Linking is a slow laborious job unless you have many months/years of experience actually doing it…. therefore always outsource.
7. Do not use popular linking services, most are a rip off by a long mile.
8. If using sites like elance.com, do not pick the cheapest price! The whole point of outsourcing is so you don’t have to worry about quality and the job being done properly.
The main thing is finding someone that will do the job right, is reliable and will do it at a good price.
If they do a great job, look after them.
9. Stipulate down to the last letter what your linking campaign must and must not include.
I would have to say that the few linking campaigns I purchased were unsatisfactory. I then did a fair amount of research and asking around until I found a company I was very happy with.
My last campaign was…
“100″ reciprocal links, same business area, minimum pr of “2″…
Results…
| Nearly all sites in my business field Very few “link” type sites, mostly decent content sites 10% in the exact same business field Pr of pages where my link was placed…. pr 2 = 57, pr 3 = 37, pr 4 = 9… plus an extra 10 links. All links are permanent Cost = US$200SSo if your thinking about linking, I highly suggest you outsource!
